Senior Discounts at Age 50, 55, 60, and 65Senior Discounts Age 55

They say 50 is the new 30, but 30 never came with this many deals. With even the youngest Baby Boomers now in the over-50 demographic, retailers, grocers, travel companies, and restaurants are all competing for their business by offering discounts. And yes, some senior discounts really do kick in when you turn 50, as long as you’re a member of AARP and are willing to claim your senior discount when you shop, dine, or book.

If you’re into freebies and deals, you’ll be happy to learn that the number of discounts you’re eligible for rises as you age, so don’t think you’ve explored all your options once you turn 50. Some merchants offer deals for the 55-and-up crowd, while others’ discounts start at age 60 or even 65. To help you find the discounts you or your parents can enjoy now, we’ve grouped the most up-to-date deals we could find by age for 50, 55, 60, and 65. Remember that you can’t age out of these offers, either. The deals in the 50-and-up section still apply after you’re 65.

As always, when you’re deal hunting, there are two things to keep in mind:

  1. Offers can change, so if you’re really set on getting a particular discount, call or go online to check that it’s still valid. That’s especially true at chain restaurants, where many but not all locations may participate in an offer.
  2. If you don’t see a senior discount at your favorite shop, go right ahead and ask. Locally owned shops may not promote their offers heavily, and most salespeople and clerks are understandably reluctant to offer a senior discount based on a guess at your age. But many places will give you 5% or 10% off if you remember to ask.

Many local public transportation systems offer discounts or even free rides to people above a certain age. In most cases, the transit authority will want you to visit their office to show your ID or Medicare card and get a senior transit pass made with your photo on it. If you hardly ever use the buses or trains in your area, this may not be worth the steps involved, but if you rely on public transit it can save you a substantial amount of money over a few months or a year.

When you’re visiting museums, zoos, and botanical gardens, remember to ask about senior admission rates. Better yet, ask about free days, especially at museums. Many big-city museums have one day a month when admission is free to everyone – that’s just about the best discount you can get.

Also, when we say you should ask about senior discounts, we mean ask whenever you can. There are some unexpected savings out there if you care to find them. For example,

  • Your utility provider may offer a senior discount to help with the cost of electricity, gas, and water.
  • Your county tax office can let you know whether you’re eligible for property tax relief to reduce the amount you owe each year on your home.
  • Talk to your auto insurer to see if they have reduced rates for safe older drivers, especially if you’re retired and no longer commuting to work.
  • Your local animal shelter may offer you a discounted or free adoption for your next dog, cat, or rabbit. Many shelters run Seniors-for-Seniors programs that match older adults with older adoptable pets that are calmer and easier to care for than puppies and kittens.
  • Many FFA chapters, animal shelters, and retailers offer low-cost vaccination clinics so you can keep your pets current on shots.
  • Finally, you may be able to earn a college degree tuition-free or just take college classes for fun. Frugal-living site The Penny Hoarder has put together a list of free college programs for seniors in every US state.

Senior discounts in your city

If you want local senior deals, we’ve found a lot of them for you. Find your hometown, your parents’ city, or cities you’ll be traveling to and see how you can save. As always, it’s a good idea to double-check with the shop or restaurant to make sure the discount is still valid – and it never hurts to ask local shops, either.

As you can see, there are a lot of discount options out there once you reach age 50 and beyond. As the retail and grocery businesses have to work harder in the years to come to compete with digital sellers like Amazon, you can probably expect more brick-and-mortar shops and local merchants to cater to seniors with discounts. And remember, it’s always perfectly OK to ask.

What about HEALTH FOOD stores? What about utility bills and rent and insurance? Do we get discounts on those necessities vital for our survival after 55? And with the free college tuition, do you get a choice of courses, and why is Louisiana the only state that offers this at 55 and all others want you to be over 60?? What’s the benefit of turning 55 without having to spend extra money to become a member of AARP? Or more money traveling and dining?

Well Debbie, I thought all of the singing tuneup girls had dropped by the wayside over the years but it seems that there is at least one still out there. What?? You don’t know what a “singing tuneup girl” is?? Well, it is a very narrow minded unimaginable person who, when life brings her lemons, [or “old” age becomes a reality to her], she throws them at every passing senior citizen in an attempt to either get attention, plan a pity party, or both. Their theme song is “Do, re, mi, mi, mi, mi, mi, ……” I think the chorus goes something like this, “So what’s in it for DO, RE, MIMIMIMIMIMIMI”

Take a reality break Debbie, and look around you. You may find that there are others in your same situation who are NOT complaining about all the things that life has not given them but rather they like to thank the good Lord for all He HAS bestowed on them and their families. Lady, we ALL have money problems, rich, poor, or somewhere in between, so don’t complain about YOUR problems to ME until you do a self analysis on your own life and what you have done for others.

I get so fed up with these people who feel that the universe owes THEM something special, with absolutely no regard to how good they have life compared to so many on this planet who are still drinking whatever dirty mucky water they can find or are eating roots and berries to survive, living in their broken down thatched hovel of a hut somewhere in a desert or a jungle environment which daily tries to kill them in one way or another. There but for the grace of God goes each and every one of us who feel that they got a “bad break” out of life.

Debbie, I am past my 3/4 century mark in my travels down that path which God put me on and I STILL am amazed, each morning I wake up, that I have been allowed to put in one more glorious day on this rock enjoying the air and sun and all the wonderful things around me which never complain, never feel sorry for themselves, and always make the most of their total environment. Whether it be a plant, flower, animal, or insect crawling on the ground, everything around me seems to be in sync with life itself. It’s only other humans who seem to have the “bitch” gene in their makeup.

And all I can feel for you Debbie is pity. Pity that you are missing out on so much in YOUR life that is enjoyable, satisfying, and calming to the body and the soul. I came into this world riding on a shock wave of confusion and pain that my mother must have felt as I left my quiet warm home for 9 months or so and was thrust into a bright glaring world of lights, other beings who were picking me up and checking me over and one of them, inflicting the very first pang of pain on me by snipping my life line to the only home I knew. You would think that, after the very first time I drew a fresh breath of air, the next experience, the feeling of pain, would have turned me against things in general but it only laid down a foundation for my trip and allowed me to find out that there was so much more to life than pain and self induced suffering.

I came here poor but I intend to leave a rich man no matter how much “money” I have or don’t have. I have riches that are so far more valuable than any form of “money” one could possibly own and, the BEST part is, there is an outside chance that ……. I may be entitled to “take it with me” when I leave!! Try THAT trick with all your discounts and rebates and other “valuables” which you will have to GIVE to someone else when that day comes and YOUR path has finally come to its end. So you enjoy yourself Debbie and you try to have as nice a day as your attitude and your disposition will allow ….. and I will surely enjoy mine as well.

I am 63 years old and have been getting the senior discount for quite sometime now at a local Dunkin’ Donuts. This morning as I got my usual coffee the DD’s employee said, you know you have to be 65 years old to get the discount. I was very surprised at her saying that to me but she responded by I’m just doing my job. I was really surprised, no other employee there has ever said that to me… I always assumed it was 60 years old. Can you please clarify the age for me.

    Thank you

Several of these senior discounts will not happen unless you ask the wait staff or the cashier, and even more won’t happen unless you are a member of AARP(of which their leadership have a socialist agenda), several will not honor AMAC cards (a conservative senior group). Don’t mean to throw cold water onto the idea that all of these places are automatically going to give you a senior discount; but just be aware of real life situations.

  19. John August 14, 2019 Reply

Goodwill in Lansing Michigan and surrounding cities “DO NOT” offer a discount any day of the week.
    No veteran, no senior, “none”.
Plus there prices are in line with Walmart. AKA not cheap.
