Protestant Assisted Living in San Diego
San Diego is home to a number of Protestant-run services for seniors, from in-home assistance to skilled nursing facilities. The most prominent such provider is St. Paul Senior Homes & Services, which has been offering senior care in San Diego since 1960. An affiliate of the Episcopal church, St. Paul, offers care to clients of all faiths and offers innovative programs to help seniors retain their independence as long as possible.
The PACE plan for living at home
St. Paul’s PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) is an option for Medi-Cal qualified seniors with ongoing health issues that make independent living a challenge. The managed care plan is designed to keep seniors healthy and in their own homes, with a network of readily available physicians, geriatric specialists, and physical therapists. PACE also offers help with scheduling appointments and transportation.
The Senior Day program
Seniors who live alone, whose family works during the day, or whose caregivers need respite care can enroll in the St. Paul Senior day program, which offers activities such as yoga and brain fitness games, frequent field trips to San Diego attractions, and daily interaction with children attending the St. Paul’s childcare program.
Independent living at St. Paul’s Manor
St. Paul’s Manor is located less than 4 blocks from Balboa Park in the elegant Banker’s Hill neighborhood. Seniors can choose a studio or one-bedroom apartment and enjoy life without the tedium of cooking, cleaning, and lawn maintenance. The Manor offers a packed activity schedule, offering everything from religious services to tai chi and Zumba classes and group excursions to restaurants and shopping centers.
Assisted living and specialized memory care at the Villa
St. Paul’s Villa is also located in Banker’s Hill and provides the next level of service for seniors who need a bit of help managing mobility and health issues. Certified nursing staffers are available round the clock, and the Villa kitchen turns out breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Film screenings, live music performances, and fitness classes are among the weekly activity choices.
The memory care program at the Villa brings together specially trained staffers, residents with memory impairments, and family members to help seniors stay comfortable, safe, and happy. Memory care program clients receive individualized care and careful monitoring for changes in their condition.
Skilled nursing care at the McColl Center
St. Paul’s most intensive levels of care are offered at the John A. McColl Family Health Center, where residents who need rehabilitative care, therapy, and long-term care have access to specialized staff, a full roster of social activities — including regular visits from kids in the St. Paul’s Daycare program — and Episcopal, Catholic, Jewish, and interfaith spiritual services.
Other Protestant senior services in San Diego
With so many Protestant churches in San Diego, there are lots of faith-based senior activities and services. The Rock in Point Loma, for example, runs a volunteer program to offer companionship and conversation to convalescent home patients and homebound seniors. The Rock’s grandparents’ ministry brings together seniors and kids in the congregation for mentoring and social time, while Seniors of the Rock offers a social and spiritual community.
